Does bonsai only work with trees?
Filed under Decorating & RemodelingSep 21Lucky Bunny – Pikan 4 ART [?LM?] asked:
I’ve been wondering if it is possible to do bonsai with anything other than trees. Like maybe sunflowers or fuschia bushes.
Bonsai Kittens. I just read the page. Cute, but the methods strike me as being extremely cruel and sadistic, just for the cheap novelty value. No thanks. It interested me, right up until I read how it’s done.
Comedy cornerI hear it works well with politicians too.

Bonsai Kittens…..
Seriously though, many bushes works. I am not sure what Serrissa Foetida looks like if allowed to grow wild, but that may be a bush.
My personal favourite is Acer Pamultam even though that is a tree.

Bonsai Kittens!
PS, the link is from ‘the museum of hoaxes’ – it’s not for real, but it sure got a lot of people worked up!
Terry Pratchett fans will be familiar with the art of cultivating Bonsai mountains! I’ve tried this myself – very relaxing!

Bushes and shrubs bonsai very well! But flowers won’t, and besides they wouldn’t last long. But, yes, try the bushes. I bet they are beautiful in bloom.

I’m curious to know what Bonsai Bobby would say on this…

You can always give it a try with your “personal grooming”. Be careful with the scissors tho! I think I’m thinking of topiaries…

Hi Lucky….I have been involved in the art of Bonsai Sculpture for about15- 20 years or so and have belonged to a local club, called Sho_Fu Bonsai Society…At one time,I owned 50+ trees of many different varieties…including Florida tropicals,Maples,Elm,Pine etc…Sunflowers are not considered to be Bonsai material…There are a few folks that have had success with Fuschia, however….
I would be happy to answer any questions concerning the art,if you wish to e-mail me…It is a challenging art form but is very rewarding after you have mastered some of the basics…there is a lot to learn!!!!….My head was splitting after my first workshop…sheesh…I didn’t realize there were a million rules to learn and different schools of thought, such as Japanese vs Chinese vs Okinawan..etc…check out my 360 and multiply pages, for a view of a Bonsai forest on rock slab,(not mine) and a 3 ft ficus that I have been working on for about 12 years….
The “bible” references for Bonsai,were written by a man named,John Naka…”Bonsai Tecniques” 1 and 2….Good luck!!…

I almost feel guilty about growing a bonsai tree, much less a breathing, feeling being.
Bonsai is the art of minaturizing normally average trees by restricting their root structure and pruning.
You could grow really crappy sunflowers, but it would only be worthwile to try it with something that isn’t programmed to die in a year.
